Privacy

What we know, and why we know it.

Planning someone's day well means asking a few personal questions — where you're staying, what you eat, how you like to play. Here is exactly what we do with the answers, and what we never do.

01Who we are

Local Knowledge SD LLC ("Local Knowledge," "we," "us") is a small, owner-operated business based in San Diego, California. We design and host curated golf, dining, and discovery days for visiting guests, and we publish a journal at localknowledgesd.com/blog.

This policy covers localknowledgesd.com and every page on it — the main site, the journal, our landing and inquiry pages, and the guest profile questionnaire. It explains what personal information we collect, why, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and the choices you have. It does not cover the separate privacy practices of the golf courses, restaurants, hotels, or transportation providers we may book on your behalf; those businesses have their own policies.

By using this site or sending us an inquiry, you agree to this policy. If you don't agree with it, please don't use the site or submit information to us.

02Information we collect from you

We only ask for what we need to plan a day and stay in touch. Everything below is provided voluntarily by you.

Inquiries and booking requests

When you use a "Customize Your Day," "Reach Out," or landing page form, we collect your name, email address, and optionally your phone number, the dates you're in San Diego, your group size, and whatever you tell us in the message field about your group and what you're hoping for.

Guest profile questionnaire

If we're building your day, we may send you a guest profile. That form collects, as applicable: name, email address, mobile number, age range, the occasion, your familiarity with San Diego, golf ability and course preferences, preferred courses, drink and food preferences, spending style, dietary restrictions and allergies, transportation and arrival details, hotel or lodging name, interests, preferred pacing, and any free-form notes you add.

Dietary restrictions and allergies can reveal health, religious, or other sensitive details. We collect them for one purpose only — so a chef or course kitchen can feed your group safely and well — and we share only what a given venue needs to do that. Leave the field blank if you'd rather not tell us, and let us know in person instead.

Local gems submissions

If you send us a recommendation through our local gems page, we collect your name, email address, and the places and notes you choose to share.

Direct correspondence

If you email, call, or text us, we keep that correspondence and any information in it — including notes we take about your preferences so we don't have to ask twice.

Information about other people in your group

Guests often give us details about traveling companions — names, dietary needs, golf ability. If you share someone else's information with us, please make sure you have their okay to do so. We treat their information exactly as we treat yours.

What we don't collect

We don't take payment on this website, so we never collect card numbers or bank details here. We don't ask for government ID numbers, and we don't have accounts or passwords for guests. We don't buy personal information from data brokers or lead lists.

03Information collected automatically

Like nearly every website, ours records some technical information when you visit, both from our hosting provider's server logs and from the analytics tools described in the next section:

  • IP address and general location derived from it (typically city or region, not a street address)
  • Browser type, device type, operating system, and screen size
  • Pages you viewed, when you viewed them, and how long you stayed
  • The site or ad that referred you to us, and search or campaign parameters in the link you clicked
  • Interactions such as clicking a call button, starting a form, or submitting one
  • Anonymous identifiers stored in cookies or local storage to distinguish one visit from another

We use this to understand which pages are useful, which ads are worth running, and whether anything is broken. We don't try to identify you personally from it.

04Cookies, analytics, and advertising tools

Cookies are small files a site stores in your browser. We and our providers use them for the following purposes:

PurposeWhat it does
Essential Keeps the site working, serves pages from the nearest server, and protects our forms from spam and abuse. These can't be switched off without breaking the site.
Analytics We use Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which pages and journal entries people actually read. Google processes this data on our behalf; see Google's Privacy Policy and how Google uses data from sites that use its services.
Advertising & conversion measurement We use Google Ads tags to measure which ads lead to inquiries, and Google may use cookies to attribute a conversion or show our ads to people who have visited before. Depending on your browser and Google's settings, this can involve cross-site tracking.
Fonts & media Our typefaces load from Google Fonts, which means your browser contacts Google's servers and your IP address is visible to them as part of delivering the files.

You can clear or block cookies in your browser settings, use private browsing, or install Google's Analytics opt-out browser add-on. You can also manage Google's ad personalization at My Ad Center and opt out of participating vendors at optout.aboutads.info. Blocking non-essential cookies won't stop you from browsing the site or contacting us.

Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

Browsers send "Do Not Track" signals inconsistently and there is no agreed standard for honoring them, so we do not currently respond to DNT. We do treat a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal from your browser as a valid request to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, as described in Section 11.

05How we use your information

  • To answer you. Replying to inquiries by email, phone, or text, and asking the follow-up questions needed to understand what you want.
  • To plan and run your day. Reserving tee times, tables, transportation, and experiences; briefing venues on group size, timing, dietary needs, and preferences; and handling changes on the day.
  • To keep in touch about your booking. Confirmations, logistics, reminders, and follow-up after your visit.
  • To improve what we offer. Understanding which experiences, courses, and journal entries resonate, and refining the site accordingly.
  • To measure our marketing. Seeing which ads and pages produce genuine inquiries so we don't waste money on ones that don't.
  • To send occasional updates — new experiences, seasonal notes, or journal highlights — where you've asked for them or where we have a legitimate interest in contacting past and prospective guests. Every marketing email has an unsubscribe link and we honor it promptly.
  • To protect the site. Detecting spam, fraud, and abuse of our forms.
  • To meet legal and accounting obligations, and to establish or defend legal claims if that ever becomes necessary.

We do not use your information to make automated decisions about you, and we don't profile you beyond the ordinary marketing measurement described above.

06Who we share it with

We're a small operation and your details stay close. We share personal information only in these circumstances:

  • Venues and partners for your booking. To hold a tee time or a table we have to pass along what the venue needs — usually a name, group size, time, contact number, and any dietary requirements. We share the minimum each partner needs, and only for bookings you've asked us to make. Courses, restaurants, hotels, and transportation companies handle that information under their own privacy policies.
  • Service providers who run our infrastructure. Our website host and form handling (Netlify), our email and messaging providers, and our analytics and advertising providers (Google). They process information on our instructions to provide their service to us.
  • Professional advisers, such as our accountant or a lawyer, where they need it to advise us.
  • Legal requirements. If we're required by law, subpoena, or valid legal process to disclose information, or where disclosure is necessary to protect someone's safety or our legal rights.
  • A business transfer. If the business is ever sold, merged, or reorganized, guest information may transfer as part of that transaction; it would remain subject to this policy or a successor policy that respects it.

We do not share your personal information with anyone else for their own independent marketing purposes.

07Selling and targeted advertising

We do not sell your personal information for money, and we never have. We don't rent, trade, or license our guest list.

That said, California and several other states define "sale" and "sharing" broadly enough that the advertising and analytics cookies described in Section 4 may count as sharing personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising or targeted advertising. To the extent that's the case, you can opt out at any time by using a Global Privacy Control signal, blocking those cookies in your browser, or emailing us at david@localknowledgesd.com with the subject "Do Not Sell or Share." We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of anyone under 16.

08How long we keep it

  • Inquiries that don't become bookings: up to 3 years, in case you come back to us, then deleted.
  • Guest bookings and profiles: up to 5 years after your visit, so we can pick up where we left off if you return and so we have the records our accountant needs.
  • Correspondence: retained alongside the related inquiry or booking on the same schedule.
  • Local gems submissions: kept while the recommendation remains useful; your contact details are removed on request.
  • Analytics data: retained by Google according to the retention period configured in Google Analytics, typically 14 months.
  • Records we're legally required to keep, such as those supporting tax filings, for as long as the law requires.

You can ask us to delete your information sooner — see Section 10.

09How we protect it

Our site is served over encrypted HTTPS connections, form submissions are transmitted and stored by our hosting provider under access controls, and access to guest information is limited to the owner and anyone he needs to brief for a specific booking. Accounts are protected with strong, unique credentials, and we don't keep guest information on unsecured devices or share spreadsheets.

No website or business can promise perfect security, and we won't pretend otherwise. If we ever become aware of a breach affecting your personal information, we'll notify you and the relevant authorities as required by law.

10Your choices

Wherever you live, you can ask us to do the following, and we'll do it:

  • Tell you what we hold. Ask for a copy of the personal information we have about you.
  • Correct it. Tell us what's wrong and we'll fix it.
  • Delete it. Ask us to erase your information, subject to records we're required to keep.
  • Stop marketing. Use the unsubscribe link in any email, reply STOP to a text, or just tell David. This doesn't stop messages about a booking you've already made.
  • Limit what a venue is told. Ask us to withhold any specific detail from a partner, understanding that some bookings can't be made without certain information.

Email david@localknowledgesd.com or call (954) 494-1606. We respond within 45 days, and usually much faster. We may need to ask a question or two to confirm you are who you say you are — we'll only use what you send for that purpose. Exercising any of these rights costs nothing and we will never treat you differently for asking.

11Your California privacy rights

If you're a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the CPRA gives you specific rights. Here's how our practices map onto its categories.

Category collectedExamples & purpose
IdentifiersName, email, phone number, IP address — to reply to you and plan your day.
Customer recordsContact details and booking history — to run and record your booking.
Commercial informationExperiences booked, spending preferences — to plan appropriately and keep records.
Internet activityPages viewed, referring ad, interactions — analytics and ad measurement.
Geolocation (coarse)City or region from IP address — analytics only.
CharacteristicsAge range, occasion — to tailor the day (for example, whether a course or venue suits the group).
Sensitive personal informationDietary restrictions and allergies, which may imply health or religious practice — used solely to arrange safe, suitable food and drink, and never for inferring characteristics about you or for advertising.
InferencesPreferences we note so we can recommend better — used only to serve you.

We collect these categories from you directly, and internet activity from cookies and analytics tools. We disclose identifiers, customer records, commercial information, characteristics, and (where needed) dietary information to the venues and service providers listed in Section 6 for business purposes.

Your rights

  • Know and access the specific pieces and categories of personal information we've collected, the sources, our purposes, and who we disclosed it to.
  • Delete personal information we hold, subject to legal exceptions.
  • Correct inaccurate personal information.
  • Opt out of sale or sharing for cross-context behavioral advertising — see Section 7.
  • Limit use of sensitive personal information. We already use it only for the purpose you gave it to us for, which is within the permitted uses under the law.
  • Non-discrimination. We won't deny service, charge different prices, or provide a lesser experience because you exercised a right.

To exercise any of these, contact us as described in Section 17. An authorized agent may submit a request on your behalf with written proof of authorization. If we deny a request, we'll explain why, and you may contact the California Privacy Protection Agency or the California Attorney General.

California's "Shine the Light" law also lets residents request information about disclosures to third parties for direct marketing purposes. We don't make such disclosures.

12Other US state privacy rights

Residents of states with comprehensive privacy laws — including Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, Texas, Oregon, Montana, and others as their laws take effect — have similar rights to access, correct, delete, and obtain a portable copy of their personal information, and to opt out of targeted advertising, sale, and profiling with significant effects. We don't engage in profiling of that kind.

Use the same contact details in Section 17. If we decline your request, you may appeal by replying to our response with the word "appeal"; we'll review and answer within the period your state's law allows, and we'll tell you how to contact your state Attorney General if you're still unsatisfied.

13Visitors from outside the United States

We're based in California and our providers store and process information in the United States. If you contact us from the UK, the European Economic Area, Canada, Japan, or anywhere else, your information will be transferred to and processed in the US, where privacy laws differ from your own. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses in our providers' terms, or on the necessity of the transfer to perform the arrangement you've asked us to make.

If the UK or EU GDPR applies to you

Our legal bases for processing are: performance of a contract (planning and delivering the day you've booked), legitimate interests (responding to inquiries, running and improving a small business, measuring marketing, preventing abuse), consent (non-essential cookies and marketing emails, which you can withdraw at any time), explicit consent (dietary and allergy information you choose to give us so we can arrange food safely), and legal obligation (tax and accounting records).

You also have the right to object to processing based on legitimate interests, to request restriction of processing, to data portability, and to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority — in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office. We'd appreciate the chance to sort it out first.

14Children's privacy

This site is intended for adults planning travel and is not directed to children. We don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16, and we don't sell or share the personal information of minors.

Family trips are welcome, and a parent or guardian may give us a minor's first name, age, or dietary needs as part of planning the group's day. We use that information only for the booking and delete it on the same schedule as the rest of the booking record. If you believe a child has given us information directly, email david@localknowledgesd.com and we'll delete it.

15Links to other sites

Our journal and pages link to golf courses, restaurants, breweries, parks, and other businesses we genuinely like. Those sites aren't ours, we don't control what they collect, and this policy doesn't apply once you leave localknowledgesd.com. Have a look at their privacy policies if it matters to you.

16Changes to this policy

As the business grows, the tools we use may change, and this policy will change with them. When it does, we'll update the "last updated" date at the top of the page. If a change materially affects how we use information you've already given us, we'll take reasonable steps to tell you directly — usually by email — and, where the law requires it, ask for your consent.

17Contact us

Questions, requests, or concerns about privacy come straight to the owner. There's no ticket queue.
